Biologist - Fine Chemicals Industry
£50,000 to £70,000 + package
We are seeking a candidate with skills in selecting and cultivating specific bacteria to produce to-order chemistry for our client. Whilst this role will focus on the discovery stage including screening and selection, the ideal candidate will also have experience in the subsequent fermentation processes required to then produce the bacterial strains at an industrial scale.
Our client either will use the selected bacteria to produce targeted chemicals for immediate commercialisation or will use these chemicals as intermediates or building blocks, which can be functionalised using conventional chemical processes.
You will work on the development of this technology, by selecting initially bacteria to utilise for this purpose, and using appropriate non-mutagenisis routes to modify these to deliver the required performance benefits.
This will lead onto production of a variety of chemical outcomes for our client, following this initial research, the objectives will be to then, through collaboration, to scale this up to production scale. However, candidates with experience in scale-up may additionally take this role on in a dual-function.
You will hold a PhD in a related area to the above, and have experience of researching desired activity and selection: to give a tangible example, a background in altering the binding site of an existing enzyme via subsequent rounds and screening to produce a novel chemical outcome, would be of interest.
You will be experienced and knowledgeable in microbiology, protein engineering, activity assaying, display/selection and isolation.
