Research and Development Team Leader

We are working with a multinational fine chemical company in Manchester who are seeking a Team Leader in their Research and Development Chemistry department.
This is a business-critical role and will call for someone with strong leadership, project management and chemistry skills. You will be planning project responsibilities for Chemists and overseeing project delivery. In a professional and safe manner producing results to the required quality within time and cost budgets.
What you’ll do:
You will work with the Research and Development Manager to ensure departmental targets are met and resources allocated. This will involve directing the activities for a team of Chemists and managing personnel gaps and training needs as they arise.
You will be working on process development activities and addressing the requirements of a project before leading these to completion to high standards. This will involve regular meetings, and ongoing dialogue with Chemists, Plant, HR, Analytical and Regulatory colleagues.
You will have responsibility for projects and use your experience to recognise and report when project activities need to change or on an ad-hoc basis resolve difficulty encountered as the project moves forward.
Customer contact will be central to this role and you will regularly meet with customers at the Manchester site or travel to their location. You will be a key part of the strategic design team and influence chemistry advice given as well as recommending project direction. You will communicate the project objectives to the team members and other departments.
This role will play a key part in health and safety and compliance with standards of safety and environmental compliance in all its activities.
You will be educated to BSc level in Chemistry or related subject with a significant experience in the above activities or to a PhD in Chemistry again with a career record of achievement in the above activities. You will be experienced in process chemistry scale up, organic chemistry, synthesis / reaction chemistry and taking fine-chemistry projects from the grams to kilo to plant scales. Management of multiple projects and people management skills. You will be a skilled operator in business to business interactions, with good communication skills and teamwork skills. We are seeking a strong chemistry knowledge and your advice will be regularly called upon.
