Job Description

Process Safety Chemist

Permanent role

We are working with a multinational chemical company who are seeking an experienced synthesis chemist to ensure safety in their labs and plant.

This role will focus on safety related chemical research projects, in collaboration with the Process Research and Development team, developing a deep understanding the reaction chemistry proposed for their Chemical Plant and ensure that any safety issues are understood and dealt with in a professional and safe manner.

What you’ll do:

You will use hazards testing equipment to generate data to ensure that scale up to production scale is fundamentally kept as a safe activity.

The role will work on a project basis and involve internal and external communications (for example with customers) and liaising with Project Leaders on any issues encountered during projects.

The role holder will be maintaining accurate records, presenting reports, and writing Standard Operating Procedures to instruct others. It will be important the role holder is keeping up to date with current practices, especially around process chemistry and engineering.

When possible you will be meeting with customers and this will require some travel from time to time. You will be an influencer of safe working practices and 5S, maintain the lab and while this isn’t a formal management role you will be giving instructions to colleagues for any processes required for safe operation of the department.

Your background:

We are seeking a candidate with several years of chemical research / synthesis experience alongside a high qualification in Chemistry i.e. MSc / PhD level. At PhD Chemistry level we will accept fewer years of experience than at BSc/MSc. This role calls for strong communication skills, proficiency in a range of IT packages (Chemdraw/ACD Labs / Reaxys) and a strong knowledge of safety and quality in fine-chemicals.

You will be in an ongoing education and training process upon joining and ideally have already completed several training activities in these fields already.
