Laboratory Engineering Technologist
We are recruiting for a Laboratory Testing role working in a construction lab at our client in Staffordshire. First of all, this role will not be a white-bench environment - more of a workshop where construction materials are tested for critical properties to keep buildings, components and structures safe. Examples of this are forces required to compress, break, shear a material, thermal performance in extremes of temperatures, resistance to weathering and no doubt several other circumstances where analytical evidence on performance is critical to have about a material before it’s put out to be used.
What you’ll do
You will be responsible for planning, setting up and carrying out testing programmes on client-supplied samples. Many of the tests are non-standard and you will be called upon to design and build your own testing rigs.
You will also write test reports to Company standards; this work will often be carried out at clients’ sites. Additionally, you will offer technical support to the Sales team including client contact. Some UK and overseas travel may be involved.
The tests our client carries out predict the performance of building materials, components and structures in a wide variety of simulated real-world environments. They measure properties such as strength, wind resistance, permeability, thermal insulation and resistance to weathering - vital considerations for their clients when developing and marketing their products.
This role calls for a strong understanding of physical properties testing, and will infolve building your own testing kit so qualification can come from a broad field. Candidates can be qualified in a physics/engineering field i.e. mechanical or construction engineering qualification at NVQ Level 3 or above, or perhaps otherwise qualified and just very good technically, maybe with hands-on hobbies requiring problem solving/engineering understanding. Apprentice training would be advantageous.
Hands-on design and build skills are an important requirement, as are accurate record-keeping and attention to detail, and we are especially interested in individuals who can express technical information, so it is intelligible to the non-technical reader, while also answering the questions of fellow technical colleagues.
Our client offers competitive terms and conditions of employment, including private medical insurance, and career development prospects are excellent.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org with your most recent CV. We recommend writing a cover letter. Should you have informal questions ahead of application please call 0161 443 4173 on this occasion, LiCa Scientific Ltd is acting as an employment agency.
