During the recent event at University of Central Lancashire we regularly were asked - what year in industry / holiday job options are there? … so we wrote you a blog! Enjoy…
The bad news - as an agency, we don’t tend to place year in industry roles though we do work on what are called fixed term contracts that can be for 6 months up to 1 year, these could be an option if you are considering trying to gain some work experience while at university but are rare compared to the bulk of our work staffing permanent positions.
The good news is you can still find such opportunities - in our experience of talking to people who have done a year or summer in industry you may simply wish to apply directly for companies if you are keen to gain a year of work experience.
For more opportunistic recruitment (for example a busy period in a business) you may get lucky with the right CV at the right time, in the inbox of a manger with a large amount of work building up on the bench who would welcome having someone join for a holiday or longer.
Details of who is out there is available quite openly in the public domain if you know how to find it. For example, some laboratories certificates of accreditation specifically list who the laboratory manager is, often their email and direct phone number. One suggestion for this being the UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) website www.ukas.co.uk which you can search based on postcode.
You can quite easily then make contact and we’re sure it would be welcomed. Additionally, there are directories published every year such as pharmafile, chemicals northwest and bionow which again list which companies are out there in your field and a few moments online typically reveals a contact email address on their website.
Write a really good CV (email us for a CV writing guide at firstname.lastname@example.org ) and get this distributed to your local laboratories directly.
