The Company

The Role

is a senior role for an experienced analytical chemist reporting to the Group Head of Chemistry.  This is an exciting opportunity for an analyical chemist with line and project management experience looking to take the next step in their career. The role will lead the existing team of analytical and purification chemists and facilities across a number of sites, supporting all internal chemistry teams in addition to providing services to external customers. Due to the breadth of sectors and industries our client provides services to; this is a varied role and would suit an individual who thrives on a wide variety of different challenges.  

Main Duties 

  • Provide strong leadership and people management skills
  • Be the focal point for the department, displaying the confidence, commitment and positive attitude required to drive others on to succeed and achieve in their day-to-day activities
  • Lead by example, demonstrating the highest levels of professionalism in order to meet the expectations of internal and external customers
  • Provide guidance to the team to ensure that the department can provide expertise in the latest techniques
  • Ensure all members of the department are effectively managed against the required competencies of their roles
  • This will be through the use of, for example, training records, regular 1:1 meetings and the setting of clear objectives to help deliver on the company goals
  • Work with the HR department, chemistry Section Heads and others as necessary, to provide training and development opportunities that will allow the department to help the Group meet its strategic challenges
  • Define future team requirements and lead the recruitment process accordingly
  • Conduct all communication in a professional and positive manner. Provide regular updates to their manager and manage the department in a positive and encouraging style. Communicate openly in meetings. Listen to the opinions of the others and respond positively to feedback
  • Demonstrate strong technical competency, gained through practical knowledge over a range of techniques, for example, HPLC, LCMS, GCMS, SFC
  • Provide effective project management
  • Take responsibility for the appropriate management of all projects within the department, taking into account customer requirements, potential future business needs as well as the needs of the individual
  • Effectively manage laboratory resources appropriately, making sure that each project has access to the equipment and personnel it requires
  • Monitor and record time allocated to projects in-line with contractual agreements
  • Take responsibility for H&S of the analytical chemistry department
  • Actively engage with the HSE officer and Safety Committee to improve HSE processes within the organisation and ensure legal obligations are fulfilled
  • Cascade relevant information down to all members of the department, ensuring that individual responsibilities are being fulfilled and that all procedures are being adhered to
  • Lead by example demonstrating the highest levels of health and safety
  • Effectively manage resources according to budget
  • Develop and maintain a budgetary plan for the development of laboratory equipment taking into account the latest developments
  • Work alongside business development and other sites within the Group
  • Provide technical support to the sales and quotations team
  • Liaise with other scientific figures across the Group to provide a bespoke array of services
  • Foster an environment of continuous improvement
  • In conjunction with other senior scientific figures actively engage in a programme of continuous improvement to help the organisation meet its stated objectives
  • Create strategies and plans which take into account innovative and new approaches to take the department forward


Qualifications/Role Requirements

The role of the Section Head – analytical chemistry would be suitable for self-motivated candidates working within a similar environment, currently looking to progress into this high-level role.

  • BSc/MSc/PhD in an analytical, chemical or related scientific field with demonstrated, relevant experience
  • Broad practical experience in an analytical chemistry setting
  • Proven experience in project management and customer interaction
  • Proven experience in line management and staff development
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to produce clear and concise reports and also to present effectively to customers and all levels of the organisation
  • Ability to demonstrate organisational and strategic perspective clearly seeing the bigger picture

  • IT literate (e.g. Microsoft Office)

Working Hours

37.5hours per week, Monday to Friday. Flexibility is required as due to the nature of this role some travel will be required
